Building work

The building work on the Minster is ongoing, with the first phase now completed. The next phase will involve the chancel and is expected to start in 2009. For a historical building such as this, one of the 100 most endangered buildings in the world, the list of jobs to do is never-ending. Ensuring it is watertight is the first step to take. This means that the internal structure does not deteriorate further and damp does not affect the decoration, as has happened in the past. The building is looking at its splendid  best now, with all signs of the previous hard work vanished and the repairers having a breathing space. Why don’t you visit and feel the peace and enjoy the tranquillity for yourself?

The Friends of Stow Minster

The Friends are off to a great start in this their first year. They have been invited to become members of The Friends of Cathedrals and will attend the Biannual Conference, next to be held in Blackburn in 2010. A committee member attended this year’s event, held at Lincoln Cathedral, much encouragement and support was given, again with recognition of the national importance of the building, the ‘mother church’ of Lincoln Cathedral.  Stow Friends have exciting plans for great events in 2009, including an Arts weekend and a evenings entertainment in a wonderful garden location.

The Friends of Stow Minster wish you and yours an excellent 2009 and we invite you all to join us in supporting those who care for St Mary’s Church, Stow, this, one of the most interesting and precious buildings of the world, needs your help if it is to continue into the 21st Century.

If you would like to join us at the Friends, or give a gift membership, individual membership is only £10 and family membership £15. A small amount for a precious gift which lasts a year and so easy to do. Newsletters are sent to all Friends and they are invited to events also.

Membership forms can be found on the website below, or in Stow church itself, and sent to the Membership Secretary, Mr Paul Howitt-Cowan or given to either of the Stow churchwardens.

A Prayer for the Friends of Stow

Present God,

You hallow time and eternity,

peoples and place,

relationships and location.

We thank you for this ancient place of prayer,

where time and eternity intersect,

lives have been touched,

faith explored,and worship offered.

Bless the Friends of Stow Minster

and all who care for St Mary’s towering arches,

rugged stone, and eloquent silence.

Bless all visitors and pilgrims,

artists, writers and musicians,

 and all of every age who search for knowledge and inspiration;

that in this sacred space

your gracious Presence may be found anew.

Through Jesus Christ our present Friend and Saviour

Amen.
